Chapter: 22

Confessions

The bright blue of the hedgehog penetrates his coat as the yellow energy begins to dissipate. The Mane 6 gallop towards him, surrounding him with looks of concern on their faces.

"Sonic, is that you?" Twilight asks worriedly as she rests a hoof on his shoulder.

"Were you… expecting… someone else?" the hedgehog replies between gasps for breath.

"How ya doing, Sugar hog?" Applejack inquires softly as she joins the lavender mare. Sonic forces out a raspy laugh and rises to his feet.

"Never better." A wave of relief flows through the group and the mares all enclose Sonic in a warm, thankful hug.

Discord rolls his eyes at the sappy display and turns to leave. "As much as I’d love to stay and watch this disgustingly sweet display, I really should be-" The Draconequus stops as an enraged Sonic leaps in front of him, causing him to pause.

"Where do you think you’re going?"

The Master Harbinger of Chaos waves his paw off to his right as he starts to back up. "Somewhere else. Maybe the dentist. Your hugging and fluffiness is so sweet, it’s giving me a cavity."

Twilight and the other mares trot up behind the Draconequus, blocking his escape. "I don't think so. You’re not going anywhere. I’ve got a few questions for you," Sonic states as he closes the gap between Discord, forcing the Master Harbinger of Chaos to backpedal as he attempts to stay out of the hedgehog's reach.

"What did you do to me?!" he snaps. Discord smirks at the question.

"Me? I didn’t do anything to you. I merely opened your eyes to the truth.” The blue hedgehog performs a sweep kick, knocking out the Draconequus’s legs and sending him toppling over. Sonic drives a cleated shoe into the Lord Harbinger of Chaos's chest and glares down at him with a deep snarl. "If you dare to try something like that again…" He leans in, pressing down on his chest. "I’ll make you wish you could die. Do I make myself clear?" Discord nods frantically and the blue hedgehog removes his foot from the Draconequus's chest.

Twilight and the other ponies exchanged worried looks before turning towards the King Harbinger of Chaos and activating their elements.

"Wait a minute, what are you doing?" Sonic asks as he watched the six begin to rise in the air.

“Sealing him in stone,” Twilight responds solemnly as they rise higher in the air.

“Hold on,” Sonic says, extending out his right hand. "We’re in the middle of the woods, it’ll take us days to get a statue out of here." The group freezes for a moment, then return to the ground. Their elements losing their luminescence as the ponies exchange looks again.

"What are we going to do with him, then?" Rarity asks with a puzzled look.

The blue hedgehog grins at the question and turns to the Draconequus. "Freak show over here is going to send us all back to Ponyville."

Discord raises an eyebrow at this as he rises to his feet. "Now, why would I do that?"

Sonic takes a step forward, the grin still on his face. "Because I’m asking nicely," he says, his knuckles cracking.

Discord swallows hard and snaps his fingers, sending everyone back to the outer limits of the town. Sonic and the Mane Six shake off the peculiar teleportation sensation and turn their attention back to the Draconequus, who glances at the group with a worried expression.

"So… we’re all good, right?” No one responds. "Right?"

Sonic appears besides Twilight and places a hand on her shoulder. "Do it!" The mare nods and begins to power up her element, the others following suit as Sonic turns his back on the group and begins to walk away.

"One last thing before I’m encased in stone for ‘eternity’ again," Discord says resignedly as he assumes a relaxed pose.

Sonic stops and turns back towards the Draconequus. "What is it?"

"Dark days are coming."

The blue hedgehog frowns at this. "What do you mean?"

"Oh, you'll find out!" Discord cackles madly, just as he's struck with the combined force of the elements. The flash of the Element Blast fades, leaving a stone statue of the Lord of Chaos with the mad expression of glee still on his face.

Sonic takes one last glance at the statue and resumes his walk away from him. The mares chase after him, all bearing worried expressions.

"Sonic, ‘re ya’ll alright?" Applejack asks.

"Fine!" the blue hedgehog snaps.

"You don't look alright, darling. Are you sure?" Rarity asks, matching the wheat-colored pony's pace.

"Yes, I'm sure. I’m. Absolutely. Peachy," Sonic replies, quickening his pace.

"Hey if you want to talk about it, we're always-"

Twilight’s cut off midsentence as Sonic whips about and glares at the ponies. "Ugh, why do you all keep pestering me with your feelings? I said I’m FINE!" The Mane 6 jump at his outburst.

"Hey! We’re just worried about you!” Rainbow Dash shouts. "No need to jump down our throats!"

The blue hedgehog lets out a heavy sigh, his hand reaching up to scratch the back of his head. "Sorry, I just... I need to be left alone for a while,” he says, walking slowly down the path ahead. "Now, if you could just let me be for a bit…" Sonic grits his teeth in rage as his eyes, focused on the hard path, focus in on a pair of pink hooves. Pinkie slowly walks towards him, a worried expression on her face. “What did I just-“

"I'm not going to ask, but I just figured," she wraps her forelegs around the hedgehog, "you need a hug."

Sonic stands motionless as the pink mare continues to hold him in a warm embrace. As she starts to pull back, releasing the hedgehog, Sonic reaches out and pulls her back in, gripping her as if she were a lifeline in a torrential sea. Tears that had been unknowingly forming all night start to stream down the hedgehog's face.

"I'm sorry everyone. I’m so sorry." He tightens his grip on the mare, burying his face in her cotton candy mane. "I wasn’t quite my way past cool self back there, was I?" he chuckles, trying to stop the tears from flowing down his face.

Applejack makes her way up to the two, a weak smile on her face. "Not quite, Sugarhog," Applejack states as she stops a few feet from the two.

"It happens to the best of us, darling. This just happened to be an off day for you,” Rarity adds as she walks next to the wheat colored earth pony.

"D-don’t worry about it. We don’t mind," Fluttershy says meekly as she joins the others.

"We're your friends, Sonic." Twilight says, putting a hoof on Sonic’s shoulder. "You're not going to get rid of us that easily."

Sonic releases his hold on the pink pony and wipes away the few tears that fell from his eyes. "Thanks, you guys." He turns to Pinkie as she’s running a hoof through her flattened mane. "Sorry I ruined your ‘do," he says with a slight chuckle.

"It’s alright, Spiky! I got this!" With that, she sticks a hoof in her mouth and blows into it. Her mane poofs out into an afro, somehow making the sound of a party popper, before she stops blowing and it settles into its usual poofiness. "There we go!"

Sonic cracks a smile at the mare's silly antics as he mocks wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "Phew, I was worried that it would stay forever flattened there for a sec." The other mares attempt to close the gap between them and the hedgehog, but are stopped by his outstretched hand. "Whoa there." The ponies give the hedgehog a puzzled look. "Though the hug helped out a lot, I still need some time alone to clear my head. Catch ya later,” Sonic says as he gives the mares a small salute and takes off in a burst of speed.

Applejack takes a few steps forward in an attempt to follow, but then turns back towards the others. "Just give ‘im some time, he'll be fine."

"True as that may be, we still have the issue of how he became that… thing, in the first place, and why," Rarity comments as she nods in the direction of Sonic's departure.

The five sets of eyes suddenly focus on Twilight, being met with a quizzical gaze. "Why is everypony looking at me?"

"You’re the Sonic expert."

An indignant frown spreads across the mare’s face. "I am not!" A few of the other ponies snicker at the claim. Rarity rolls her eyes at the other ponies’ reaction. "I’m not going to be able to convince you, am I? Ugh, whatever. Let’s finish this up elsewhere." The other mares nod in agreement, and depart; leaving the now stone Harbinger of Chaos on the outskirts of town.

The Element Bearers sit and talk amongst themselves as they’re spread out around the display area of the Carousel Boutique, all bearing signs of annoyance or fatigue "So, does anypony have any more ideas?" Applejack inquires as she casts her gaze around the room, the other ponies shrugging in response.

"Oooh, oooh! Maybe this crazy demon with nine legs and seven eyes and six tentacles was feeling really tricky and decided to possess Spiky when he was really young, then the village found out and placed a seal on him, holding the demon in for years and years, but leaving Spiky as an outcast for life because of the demon, but the stars planets aligned in a special pattern last night and freed the demon within him, letting the demon possess Spiky and make him go all crazy!" Pinkie Pie suggests, gaining few odd looks from the other mares. "What?" The pink pony shrugs.

"…Well, that’s certainly an… interesting theory, but the next planet alignment isn't for at least another decade," Twilight responds as she levitates a scroll in front of her.

The unicorn fashionista uses her magic to close a book in front of her. "I think we should call it a night, maybe we'll think of something tomorrow." The other mares nod in agreement and depart to their homes, each saying their goodbyes and promising to meet up the next day.

Twilight enters the library with a slightly peeved expression on her face from being unable to think of anything. As she uses her magic to illuminate the room, she notices a familiar pair of running shoes resting atop a certain gold trophy in the corner of the room. The mare raises an eyebrow at the sight and starts making her way to the upper level.

------

Trying to be as stealthy as possible, the lavender mare enters the room, using only the minimal amount of light needed to navigate around the stacks of books scattered about the room. As she makes her way up the staircase, Twilight spots a familiar shape in the bed across from hers, sleeping soundly. The unicorn smiles at this and uses her magic to pull the covers up and over the sleeping hedgehog and makes her way to her own bed.

A loud shout awakens the mare from her slumber. Twilight lets out a low groan and rubs her eyes with one of her hooves before turning her attention to the one responsible. The blue hedgehog across from her thrashes about, whimpering in his sleep. The mare's ears perk up as she notices this, prompting her to slide off the bed and trot towards the sleeping hedgehog.

Twilight stands before the restless blue hedgehog, a hoof on his shoulder. "Hey are you-eeep!" The mare lets out a squeak as two strong arms wraps themselves around her and pull the unicorn into the bed. The mare's face turns several shades of crimsons as she's pulled close to the sleeping hedgehog. "Sonic..." His grip tightens.

"I'm so sorry, everyone! I failed! I couldn't save you!" the blue hedgehog shouts as fresh tears stream down his face. Twilight tries to break free as her rear legs still stand on the floor, only to be pulled completely into the bed with the sleeping Sonic. "Sonic, it’s okay, calm down. It’s alright, it’s just a nightmare. Sonic, p-please let me go, you're hurting me," the mare whimpers as she continues to try to squirm free of the hedgehog's iron grip.

A pair of emerald green eyes snap open and stare back at her as their owner’s face goes from one of pain and fear to puzzlement. "Twilight? What are you doing here?"

The mare frowns at the question. "You kinda pulled me into the bed in your sleep. Could you please let me go? I can’t breathe." Sonic looks down, noticing his arms wrapped around the violet unicorn and lets out an small chuckle as he releases his hold, letting the mare take deep gulps of air.

"Sorry about that. But what were you doing all the way over here?" He raises an eyebrow at the mare. "Were you watching me sleep?” He grins. "Twilight Sparkle, I never knew you were into that sort of thing," he scoffs, mocking being appalled. Twilight glares at the hedgehog and gives him a sudden shove, pinning him to the bed. "Easy there Twilight, it was only a joke."

The mare's annoyed expression softens into a look of gentle concern. "You were yelling in your sleep, I came over to see what was going on."

Sonic’s grin falters a bit, but picks back up again as he looks at the mare above him. "Nothing to worry about, Twi. Just a bad dream. That's all."

The frown from earlier returns to her face. "If it was ‘just a bad dream’, why are you still crying?" Sonic reaches up to touch his face and stares in shock as he pulls away his hand to find a damp spot on his glove. "That wasn’t just a bad dream, it was a full blown nightmare, terrifying and real enough to..." She drops her head and tucks it close to her chest. "…To make you do something like that."

Twilight's voice cracks as several tears fall from beneath her fringe and drip down onto the hedgehog’s stomach. "Twilight?" he whispers as he stares up at the crying mare.

"Why… why do you keep doing that?" Twilight says as she tries to fight off the tears. "Every time something is bothering you, you always just brush it off and say, ‘It’s fine,’ and try to put on a facade." The unicorns takes a deep breath. "You're not alone here. You don't have to keep acting like nothing bothers you." Sonic raises a hand to the mare's face, who in turn holds it close with one of her forelegs. "We're your friends, and we care about you. I care about you." Twilight takes a deep breath and leans in closer to the hedgehog. "Sonic… I love you." The hedgehog's eyes widen, prompting the lavender mare to let out a small laugh. "I finally said it, Celestia knows how long I've wanted to.

Sonic grins at the mare above him.
